In October 2007, while looking for something interesting to read, I came across a blog posting about a leaked BBC email. While it was interesting, it appeared relatively insignificant. There was no hint that this was to be the beginning of an investigation that would span more than four years and to lead to one of the greatest scandals in the history of the BBC.

This long article tells the story of how two determined bloggers unearthed a plot by environmentalists and BBC journalists to subvert the corporation's output, excluding global warming sceptics from the airwaves.

The Propaganda Bureau edition by Andrew Montford Politics Social Sciences eBooks

This gripped from the outset. The intrigue, the slithering and sliding, the ducking and diving, all on the part of the BBC, who squandered many thousands of tax payers' money in trying to conceal the names of those attending a policy meeting to stamp out any possibility of a balanced approach being adopted (as it should have been from this 'non-partial' body) in considering the subject of climate change reads like a suspense novel. Gradually the mask slips, revealing more and more of the unwelcome and embarrassing truth to expose the reality of the BBC's lack of impartiality, it's hidden agenda exposed for all to see. It's not a long book, but one of the best reads I've enjoyed in a long time. Do buy it!

The Propaganda Bureau edition by Andrew Montford Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This short pamphlet presents the fascinating story of how one lone British pensioner joined forces with the author (a well-known blogger on climate change) to track down the attendees at an astounding meeting that set the BBC on a course of full-scale all-guns-blazing adoption of the climate change catastrophe. 28 top BBC executives in all facets of the network (news, drama, documentaries, even children's programming) met with 28 experts on climate change to discuss how they could integrate the message into all parts of the network.

Except--were they really experts? The BBC described them as mostly climate scientists, but did not name them. The pensioner decided to try to find out who had attended.and submitted a Freedom of Information request. The BBC stonewalled, citing the Chatham House rules that protected the anonymity of experts proffering advice. The pensioner and author Montford persisted, gradually forcing the BBC into court at last. Once again, they came in with a horde of lawyers, facing the pensioner alone (well his wife was with him). Obviously considerable financial resources were expended to keep secret the names of all these "climate scientists". The conflict became named "28Gate."

I won't give away the ending here, but it raises deep concerns about the power of small groups to influence a mighty broadcasting entity to adopt a stance that can affect millions of people, including children. Trust once lost is hard to regain. Will the BBC review its actions in this matter? Or are we in for another cover-up a-la Watergate?
