When I saw the cover of The Capital Underground, I knew the book had to be about the War on Drugs and the reasons behind it. I wasn't disappointed. I read a few pages of the book and then downloaded it to my Kindle. From the author's perspective, the issue of marijuana legalization and the government's role involves huge sums of money, greed and corruption. Now that I've read this true-to-life novel, I believe the author is correct in his assessment.Not only does Ruthfield build a case for legalization, but sardonically and dramatically points out the significant flaws in our policing and judicial systems, especially as they relate to the constant trampling of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights by government operatives.
Ari Hirsch, the book's protagonist, appears to be a guy who was, and perhaps still is, willing to stand up for his principles including going to prison if need be to protect his clients and their freedom. Because of his credentials - an attorney, CPA and former status as a special criminal investigator for the Internal Revenue Service - apparently he had particularly singular experiences with both sides of the law.
Ruthfield's writing is sprinkled with metaphors that are both funny and incisive, and the verbal painting of his characters is more than just memorable. His descriptions are so colorfully detailed that I could almost see the cast of characters standing in front of me.
The story, which I can only describe as an international legal thriller, is very well-written by an author whose research was not only on target but startlingly specific, authentic and meticulous. I enjoyed reading it so much that my only complaint is that the story had to come to an end.
Regardless of one's politics or beliefs regarding the legalization of marijuana, The Capital Underground is an exciting work that's simply hard to put down.

This book was a real page turner. It opened my eyes to the actual operations of our government that I had no clue even existed. I grew up in the 1960's, when most people were unaware of the events surrounding the nations growing drug problems. Mr. Ruthfield's book is compelling, recounting fictionalizations of quite possibly actual events. I feel the author has done an excellent job in this endeavor, and I highly recommend this book.
Author Ron Ruthfield has packed 400 pages of excitement into a "must read" novel. It will appeal to everyone, especially readers who enjoy blends of crime, drugs, legal maneuvers and lives gone sour. Completing "The Capital Underground" will prompt the question "Where can I get other books written by this guy?" Surprisingly, it's the author's first novel and one would hope there's a sequel now in production. If the book is based on real experiences, as claimed, readers will puzzle over who the subject really is and if he's famous. He's probably not well known, but that doesn't matter because his exploits are famous now, from cover to cover in this action-packed novel. Written in a breezy style, it's a gripping package that will keep a reader's attention focused on every page. It's not only a terrific read, it's also a perfect gift for friends who appreciate good writing and suspense. Highly recommended.
An outstanding introduction to life in Witsec and how the gov't. enters one's life and attempts to maintain control of a person.
The main character, Aristotle Hirsch, is a bigger than life person who shows how a brilliant individual can use the system and accomplish good things. He is surrounded by a cast of characters who are both interesting and unusual at the same time.
Hopefully, we'll see more form this author.
The Capital Underground is a poignant account of the war on drugs, a subject which has been written about for decades. But I've never read anything about the controversial issue of marijuana legalization in quite the same way as Ruthfield presents it. The chronology, which jumps back and forth through decades, is a clever device used by the author to weave together the main themes of the book, which not only include illegal drug trafficking but insight into the U.S. Marshal's Witness Protection Program and the perpetual hunt for assets squirreled away in international financial institutions. Ruthfield also sprinkles the chapters with actual historical events and personal commentary that make the book that much more enjoyable and alive, and colorizes his characters in such detail that he makes them feel as though you know exactly who they are. Having lived in South Florida most of my life, including the days of the Cocaine Cowboys, I know the adventures of the main character, Ari Hirsch, are about as real as they get. The author also leaves his readers hanging at the very end, but you'll have to read it yourself to appreciate how he does it. The Capital Underground is a great read and would make an even greater movie or TV series. NPL
A friend gave me The Capital Underground, so I didn't know what to expect. The plot and the characters immediately hooked me. The storyline deals with the hero Ari Hirsch and his "adventures" dealing with a cast of fascinating characters as the novel moves him from south Florida to South Dakota to Washington to the inner sanctum of Europe's secret banking system. Ari is being coerced by the US Government to use his personal skill set and experience to help avert an international political imbroglio affecting at least several nations. With the sweep and pace and humor of a John Grisham novel, the author takes us on an adventure with Ari and an unforgettable cast. We are told that the plot is based on true events and characters, but I am uncertain whether this is also fiction. Being a Libertarian, I personally enjoyed the story of the Government's failed War on Drugs as "the tail wags the dog." Ruthfield seems to set us up for a sequel, so I hope that one is forthcoming. I highly recommend this legal thriller.
